Leonardo’s NFT Bear Head at Christie’s auction

An NFT that reproduces Leonardo Da Vinci’s bear head will be auctioned at Christie’s. The famous auction house therefore confirms the sector’s interest in non-fungible tokens.

The work was created by Hackatao (pseudonym representing a couple of artists Sergio Scalet and Nadia Squarci) and the auction will be held from 3 to 8 July in the London office

Leonardo’s Bear Head, the original and the NFT version, are up for auction

As the short video posted on Twitter shows, Leonardo’s Bear Head has been digitally recreated.

The curious thing is that alongside the digital reproduction in NFT format, on 8 July Christie’s will also auction the real work

Yes, because the “Bear’s Head” designed by Leonardo will also be made available to buyers, willing to spend an estimated amount of between 9 and 13 million euros.

This drawing, that of Leonardo, is very particular because it is made with a silver tip on prepared paper, a technique that Leonardo Da Vinci learned from his teacher, Verrocchio. There is no doubt that Leonardo is the author. At the bottom left is his signature. The work is very small, a square of 7 centimeters on each side.

The drawing was probably part of the preparatory work for more important works. In any case, the experts are ready to bet that the auction sale of the Bear’s Head could break the previous record of the amount paid to win a work by Leonardo. It was 2001 when Christie’s always awarded the design of the horse and rider studio for 8 million pounds.

Auction houses crazy for NFTs

Apparently auction houses seem to love NFTs very much. After the record sale of a Beeple NFT for 69 million dollars, also at Christie’s, other sales have also entered history. For example, an NFT from the CryptoPunk series , one of the first created in NFT history, was auctioned at Sotheby’s for $ 11 million.

All that remains is to see what will happen on July 8 , and how much those who want to win the Bear’s Head will be willing to pay, both in the original version of Leonardo and in the NFT version of Hackatao.
