Protesters in El Salvador Set Fire to Bitcoin ATM in Defiance of President Bukele

A group of protesters in El Salvador recently set fire to a Bitcoin ATM as part of a demonstration against President Nayib Bukele’s recent policies, including the adoption of BTC as legal monetary tender.

According to a series of tweets by news outlet Teleprensa, a gathering of protestors set fire to a crypto kiosk in the Plaza Gerardo Barrios of El Salvador’s capital city San Salvador on September 15. A video of the event shows the burning kiosk amidst a crowd of onlookers and journalists. Protestors also spray painted the area with anti-Bitcoin slogans against the President’s new monetary policies.

The report by Teleprensa says the demonstrators were protesting President Bukele’s adoption of Bitcoin as a form of legal tender by setting fire to the crypto kiosk and nearby furniture.

San Salvador’s Mayor Mario Durán later tweeted that city workers had pulled out of the area surrounding the demonstration due to a number of threats.

The Bitcoin kiosk, known as a Chivo, is one of two hundred machines installed in El Salvador to promote the government’s adoption of BTC as legal tender. President Bukele has previously stated his desire to place crypto ATMs “everywhere” in the country while reiterating that no citizen will be forced to use Bitcoin or digital assets.
