Ethereum 2.0: Launch could be 6-8 weeks away according to developer

  • Ethereum Developer, Ben Edgington, publishes an update on the progress in key components of Eth2.
  • Edgington calls on the Ethereum community to use other clients to ease the burden on Prysm.

Ethereum 2.0 developer, Ben Edgington, gave an update on the progress of the key components. According to his post, version v1.0.0 of candidate 0 has been released for phase 0 of the Eth2 or Beacon Chain. In that sense, he mentioned some changes made with respect to the previous version.

The new version is more resistant to DoS and has had an update in its BLS standard. Therefore, the zero secret key and the infinite public key with its signature have been excluded. In the configuration, key parameters have been changed which have the following effects:

  • The state of genesis will be known one week before the beginning of the Beacon Chain. Clients and users will have more time to prepare.
  • Penalties during non-finalisation have been reduced.
  • The base penalty for being slashed has been changed to 0.25 ETH, as a temporary measure.
  • Another temporary change, the proportional slashing has been decreased to one-third.
  • The data voting period for Eth 1 has been doubled and will last 6-8 hours after depositing and participating in the beacon chain.

Edgington added that only two configuration parameters are missing. One of these involves the deposit contract. About this component, the developer said he is “waiting for news”. However, the deposit contract should be ready within the next few days and in about two months the beacon chain should follow, as the Ethereum developer stated:

Basically, as I understand it, we are good to go: deposit contract in the next few days; beacon chain genesis 6-8 weeks later. (This is not an official statement!). Meanwhile, be careful out there. Many fake deposit contracts and Launchpad front-ends will erupt in the coming days. Look out for the official anouncements: do not send Eth to random contracts; this is not DeFi.

Ethereum 2.0 test network and clients status

Edgington noted the progress made with Zinken after the failure of the first “dress rehearsal” with the Spadina testnet. The developer said that although it was not a “perfect” test it worked well enough for the team to focus on other parts of the project. On the other hand, Medalla still suffers from low participation stating that “people are getting bored with test networks”. Therefore, he believes that phase 0 of the Ethereum 2.0 should be launched “as soon as possible”.

The Ethereum 2.0 test networks have had difficulties, especially with the Prysm client. One of the problems highlighted by Edgington’s post is that users are overloading the client. Therefore, he invited them not to “take a risk” and use another of the clients for Ethereum 2.0. In that regard, he quoted project coordinator Danny Ryan:

At this point in time there are many robust eth2 clients. If we achieve a better distribution for mainnet, single client issues, like we saw on Spadina, will have a much smaller overall impact on network health.

When referring to rollups, the developer cited Ethereum’s inventor, Vitalik Buterin. In early October, Buterin gave an update of the progress in this important area for the Ethereum network. Ethereum’s inventor said that this solution will be complemented with Ethereum’s 2.0 sharding method. Finally, Edgington introduced the possibility of “Tokenising stakes”. However, he noted that this could lead to a possible increase in network centralization.
