ETH 2.0 Client Teams Shouldn’t Be too Quick to Declare Launch Readiness

Vitalik Buterin, one of the six co-founders of Ethereum, is subtly dismissing comments from Richard Ma, the CEO of Quantstamp—a smart contract auditing firm, who said the Beacon Chain mainnet is ready for launch.

ETH2 Clients Shouldn’t be in a Hurry

In a tweet on Oct 26, Vitalik responded to a Decrypt article, highlighting the comments from Richard, saying if any of their ETH2 client team feels they are ready to launch, they should proceed to ship it themselves.

Richard comments come at a time when they completed the auditing of Teku, a ConsenSys-developed Eth2 client.

According to ConsenSys, Teku is the “Ethereum 2.0 client empowering businesses to stake on the next evolution of the Ethereum network” written in Java. It is also institutional-ready, meeting their security requirements. The client is built by the same team behind Hyperledger Besu, a leading Ethereum client for enterprises.

In a prepared statement, Richard said Eth2 was on track to deliver Phase 0 soon without stating the date.

“Ethereum 2.0 is on track to deliver Phase 0 in the very near future. Client teams have spent countless hours coordinating, testing, and working with auditing firms to ensure that the foundation of Ethereum 2.0 is ready for delivery.”

The ETH2 Launch Debate

The Beacon Chain mainnet is the first of the three-stage rollout of ETH2.

A milestone for Ethereum, it is expected the eventual activation of Serenity, scheduled for the next year or two, will solve scalability and energy-efficiency faced by ETH1.

However, the team is yet to clearly state the time when the deposit contract for Beacon chain and Phase 0 will begin.

Developers working for different Eth2 clients have on various occasions confirmed the readiness of Phase 0, claiming it will activate at a tentative time in Q4 2020 or by the latest Q1 2021.

There were even talks of launch by mid-November 2020 subject to the audit results of a critical library that confirms transactions and creates private keys in ETH2.

Still, the Ethereum community remains in flux without guidance on the exact date.
